As human beings, all of us need to express ourselves and communicate with others. English language is now a universal language spoken in many countries.
In Singapore, English is the common language between the different races. With English language, it is possible for different races to effective communicate with one another, conveying the message across with clarity. This unites the different races in Singapore together.
From the article “Beijing steps up English-language drive”, it shows that even Chinese speaking countries are stepping out of their comfort zone to improve in their English language. As stated, “Ahead of the 2008 Olympics, about 5.5 million residents of the Chinese capital were taught a number of sentences for basic conversations in English”. It is good for more people to learn English as one of their language, be it first or second language. This is because with the ability to speak English, they are able to communicate internationally or with the foreigners.
Also, as the article states, “A minimum of 60 percent of shop assistants, receptionists and hairdressers under 40 will also be required to pass English tests by 2015, as will 80 percent of police officers”, this shows how the government is preparing for the country in the area of tourism. As more foreigners visits Beijing, people are able to communicate efficiently in English and there will not be any serious communication barrier.
Without a common language between two, translation is required to communicate. However translation is very time consuming and sometimes one may not be sure if the message is delivered correctly or successfully.
In conclusion, having a common language between different races as well as different nationality is important for communication. In time to come, English language can be one common language spoken by most of the people in the world.
