Cyber wellness (Sunday, July 11, 2010 / 6:18 AM)
Cyber wellness is defined as being responsible, respectful and rational, as well as being alert to scams and how to protect oneself. It is indeed important for the people and especially the youth of today to be concerned with the way they use the Internet as Internet is being accessed easily these days with not only desktops, but also laptops and 3G mobile phones.
Firstly, it is important to prevent one from cyber bullying and from being cyber bullied. Youths of today may be irrational and thus when they are angered or frustrated, they may seek to bully others online to vent their anger or, it could be just for plain entertainment. These youths need to know that they are accountable for their own actions. Youths who are cyber bullied also need to learn that they should not keep it to themselves as there are incidents whereby many have committed suicide due to the depression brought by cyber bullying. Others have changed to be of low self esteem or hateful.
Secondly, it is important to be careful when communicating with strangers online. One should not disclose any personal information such as phone number, address or picture to anyone on the computer network. There are many predators out there who lie about who they are online, preying on youths who are ignorant and gullible. Therefore youths need to be wise and not to meet up with anyone alone or without telling their parents.
Thirdly, it is important to not make nasty comments or remarks against any race or religion. It is hurtful and it makes others of that same race or religion hurt and insulted as well.
In conclusion, youths should be exceptionally careful when using the Internet. Parents should keep an eye on their kids and monitor their networks. Youths on the other hand should be responsible as well. They should be honest with their parents about their online activities. Schools are able to play a part as well. Talks and seminar should be available for students to learn more about cyber wellness so as to equip them with adequate knowledge about using the Internet correctly and wisely.
