S'poreans split on Mother Tongue weighting (Monday, May 17, 2010 / 8:33 AM)

In my opinion, Mother Tongue should not lower its standard. This is because if the MOE lowers down the standard, people will think that Mother Tongue is not as important as English Language. Some English-speaking parents think that by having higher standard of MT, this will cause their children to do badly for their exams, get low grades for MT and cannot get into best secondary schools. However, by maintaining the standard of MT, those students who are strong in their MT will have a higher chance to get into best secondary schools.

The impact to business is that nowadays Singapore has quite a number of foreigners that came from many parts of the worlds. Those foreigners might not be able to handle English Language well, so MT will be important for us to communicate with them while doing business.

The impact to society will be that there are many elderly in Singapore who does not speak and understand English Language. So, it will be very difficult for those people who only speak EL to understand what those elderly wants.
