Sngaporean split in mother tongue weighting (Friday, May 14, 2010 / 10:28 PM)
After reading this article, you will realize that most of the Singaporean are still very concern about their mother tongue being replaced or becoming a second class language. Most of them do not agree to lower down the weighting of mother tongue in PSLE.
Although lowering the weighting of mother tongue may lessen students’ burden and stresses dealing with examination, and enabling students who excelled in other subjects to be able to get good grades and went in a good school. This may be useful for English-educated students if they were planning to go overseas for further studies.
However, we should not be sacrificing our mother tongue to achieve that. Just like what the web designer bonston lee said in the article, this will affect students who are strong in their mother tongue to be not able to get good grades. As china’s and India’s economic are growing rapidly, our society needs more talents who are strong in both their English and mother tongue. This will enable Singapore to have a better relationship with these countries. At society at large, as more students neglecting their mother tongues, precious traditions and cultures will soon be forgotten.
