Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, acknowledge, manage and handle your emotions in such a way that promotes personal growth. Emotionally intelligent people know the real reasons for their emotions and thus they do not confuse them with other factors nor do they get their past involved in the decisions they take. Emotional intelligence is a way of identifying and managing your emotions in such a way that promotes a happier and a healthier life.

Self Reflection (Monday, July 26, 2010 / 8:56 AM)
For the past few weeks of blogging, it has enabled me to gain a greater understanding on the current affairs such as Weightage of Mother Tongue Language, World Cup affecting Productivity. Blogging has taught me how to reflect on such articles regarding the different current affairs and to think more in depth as to question myself why certain things will happen.
Through blogging on the various topics given, I became more interested in current affairs as well. Therefore I regularly visit The Straits Time online and also sometimes by reading the newspapers to keep myself updated of what is happening in Singapore and also around the world. Previously, reading newspapers would be a chore for me and whether to be updated with the current affairs, does not matter to me. It is because of this need to read these articles to complete the assignment; I now want to read such articles to update myself of the current affairs.
In conclusion, this blogging experience has been a fruitful one! It has slowly changed me to be more mature in terms of my thinking, and have also benefited me in terms of my writing skills!

Emotional Intelligence ( / 8:55 AM)
Emotional Intelligence describes an ability to perceive, assess, and manage the emotions of one's self, and of others. From the two articles, we can see that in this job market, employers are now looking for people who have high emotional intelligence who knows how to relate to people well. In Singapore a fast paced society, it is a norm to always be under pressure. Therefore it is important to have the emotional intelligence to know how to react at a time like this.
Emotional intelligence is important. A person with low emotional intelligence is less cooperative unable to work well under pressure. It is necessary to be able to manage the stress given by the job and not to avoid it. This might affect the rest negatively, causing them to be under the same pressure as well. We cannot deny the fact that emotions are contagious. Also, a person with low emotional intelligence does not consider and is insensitive to another’s feelings. One who is insensitive to others will not be able to gain favour from the superior or even his or her own colleagues. They may feel that they are not being treated fairly, or in an incorrect manner. This could probably lead to unhappiness or even conflicts within the company because of the inability to communicate properly.
On the other hand, people with high emotional intelligence are pretty aware of their own feelings. Also, they are compassionate and empathetic towards those around them. Therefore these people are often well liked by those around them because they are considered more sensitive. People with high emotional intelligence tend to stay on the job longer as well as they are emotionally more resilient in which this shows why more and more employers are looking for people like this.
In conclusion, emotional intelligence is as important as intellectual quotient (IQ) when it comes to hiring employees because good communication skills are required to be successful in delivering one’s point. Also, the productivity of the company truly depends on the employees. Thus hiring those with low emotional intelligence could affect the productivity of the company as they are less cooperative.

emotional intelligence and self reflection ( / 5:35 AM)
In the past when looking for a job, the employer usually looks at the certificate and qualification of the job applicants, which is IQ (Intelligence quotient). EQ was never a factor that contributes to whether they will get employ. But time has change, now the employer is looking at the EQ (emotional intelligence) of the applicants as well.
Having both EQ and IQ for the applicants is definitely an advantage when it comes to the chance of being employ. EQ varies with people as some of them might be better at building relationships while some are better at self controls when facing with a rude boss or customers.
Older employees would have better EQ compare to younger employees as they have more experience to find a solution out of a difficult situation. Research collected by the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations shows that salespeople, military recruiters, and executives with better scores on written EQ tests outperformed and out-earned colleagues who scored lower.
EQ is also important to higher position such as manager or executive as they need to have this to be able to communicate and build good relationship with his subordinates. This is beneficial to the companies as the conflicts among employees will reduce. Thus they could work better together to meet the deadlines and budgets.
Self reflections
For the past 14 weeks, the whole blogging experience was normal. Writing in business style was fun as it does not have so many restrictions as what normal English language style has. And we must developed the “you attitude” in the writing format as the usual “I”, “me” cannot be use.
This is also the first time writing a business style format on a blog. The article each week was also very interesting although some article was too long and boring. And some article which is so long cause me to become sleepy after reading it only a few times.
Sometimes I just did this blogging exercise for the sake of doing homework. As blogging was not a favourite thing I like to do on the web. I usually have to spend at least an hour just to finish up the week’s topic

Self Reflection (Sunday, July 25, 2010 / 9:12 AM)
In the past before starting to post on this blog, news are just news to me. It does not mean anything and took it as something that will never happen to me. It is something that I only "read" it but not thinking any deeper regarding that particular news.
However, I have been thinking a lot after posting and responding regularly to these articles. It makes me look things in a more all-rounded way and with more depth. It also helped me to realize that our life and things happening around us are closely linked to the business world that we are in. After all these posting of blog post, it also helps me to learn how to phrase my words into a more professional way, as well as brings me closer towards business writing method.
After posting for these few weeks, I realize that actually news articles and business writing was not as boring as I thought them to be. I will try harder to embrace the business writhing method and use it thoroughly in my future career.
Emotional Intelligence and self reflection ( / 8:31 AM)
In the current society, by having the basic qualification or the necessary skills will not lead u to success instead having high EQ will be a different story. Nowadays, most companies are seeking for workers who are all-rounded. They must be able to work well with their colleagues and at the same time produce quality work, and last but not least, a outstanding character/personality. It will be taxing on the company to replace managers who cannot work well with their subordinates and they still have to mend the broken relationship. On the other hand, older workers possess valuable experience which is beneficial to the organization.
Regardless of executive level positions or a normal clerk, job applicants should posses the minimum level of EQ.
After doing weeks and weeks of blog entries, the discussions has deepen my thoughts and widen my views. I learnt to think from other views rather than my usual “one-way” thinking. Also, reading on these articles allows me to know more on what is happening and get to know different types of views from different countries.
I hardly touch newspaper last time. After a few weeks of blog entries, I realized that by reading news and absorbing the knowledge from there is valuable to me. Due to the lack of exposure, my thinking is not mature enough to give opinions which are constructive.
Even though there is no more blog entries, I will still continue the habit of reading newspaper to widen my thoughts.
